A live usb is an usb flash drive containing a full operating system that can be booted. Live usb are closely related to live CD but sometimes have the ability to persistently save settings and permanently install software
packages back onto the usb device. Live CD and Live usb can be used in embedded systems for system administration or data recovery or the testing of operating system distributions without committing to a permanent installation on the local hard disk drive. Many of the Linux distributions can also be used from an usb flash drive.
Linux Live USB Creator
Linux Live USB Creator is free software for Windows. Created by Thibaut Lauziere, LiLi USB Creator formerly known as uSbuntu Live creator, can create Linux usb flash drive from a source Image, ISO or CD. It can also download the IMG or ISO.
Creates bootable live usb of many Linux distributions. Makes persistent installs to save all documents created and modifications made to the system. Run Linux directly in Windows using Portable VirtualBox. Hides created files in Windows. Non-destructive install (does not format the device). Makes https connection to remote servers without asking user.

Live USB Install is another live Linux usb creation tool created by Krasimir S. Stefanov. It can be used to install a live Linux distribution on a usb drive from ISO, CD/DVD, or torrent download. Other unique features include the ability to customize the syslinux.cfg file, use WinGrub, or write an IMG file to the flash drive.Live USB Install was written in python and will create a live Linux usb from within Windows or Linux.
Rufus is a small utility that format and create bootable usb flash drives, such as usb keys/pen drives, memory sticks, etc. Its run a low-level utility.
UNetbootin is a live usb creation tool that can be used to create a live linux usb flash drive from an ISO. UNetbootin was created by Geza Kovacs, released under GNU GPL v2. Many Linux distributions are supported out of the box with custom install options available for Linux distributions that are not. It is important to mention that live linux usb flash drives created with this tool. The resulting usb Linux install will function just as it does from a CD.

Makes persistent installs to save all documents created and modifications made to the system. Persistence will only work with fat16 or fat32 formatted drives.
YUMI (Your Universal Multiboot Installer) is the successor to multiboot iso. it can be used to create a multiboot usb flash drive containing multiple operating systems, antivirus utilities, disc cloning, diagnostic tools, and more. Contrary to multiboot iso which used grub to boot iso files directly from usb. YUMI uses syslinux to boot extracted distributions stored on the usb device and reverts to using grub to boot multiple iso files from usb if necessary.
YUMI works much like universal usb installer, except it can be used to install more than one distribution to run from your usb. distributions can also be uninstalled using the same tool.
