Configuring Windows Firewall

Before You Begin:

1.    Choose StartControl Panel.

2.    In the Control Panel window, click the System and Security link.

3.    In the Windows Firewall section, click the Allow a program through Windows Firewall link.

4.    In the Allowed Programs window, click Change settings.

5.    In the Allowed programs and features list, scroll down and check the Remote Desktop check box.

6.    Click OK to save the setting and close the Allowed Programs window.

7.    Close the System and Security window.

Scenario:

A customer has asked you to configure Windows Firewall so that users cannot use Remote Desktop to access his system from another computer on the network. He also wants to log dropped packets and successful connections.

How You Do It

1.      Disable the Remote Desktop exception.

a. Choose StartControl Panel.

b. In the Control Panel window, click the System and Security link.

c. In the Windows Firewall section, click the Allow a program through Windows Firewall link.

d. In the Allowed Programs window, click Change settings.

e. If necessary, in the Allowed programs and features list, scroll down and uncheck the Remote Desktop check box.

f.     Click OK.

2.      Configure logging.

a. In the System and Security window, click the Windows Firewall link.

b. In the left pane, click the Advanced settings link.

c. In the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window, choose ActionProperties.

d. In the Logging section, click Customize.

e. From the Log dropped packets drop-downlist, select Yes.

f.     From the Log successful connections drop-down list, select Yes.

g. Click OK twice.

h. Close the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window.

i.      Close the Windows Firewall window.
