How to Configure Windows Firewall in Windows 7 and Windows XP

Procedure: Configure Windows Firewall

To configure Windows Firewall in Windows 7 and Windows XP:

1.      In Windows 7:

a.     From the Control Panel, click System and Security.

b.    In the System and Security window, in the Windows Firewall section, click the Allow a program through Windows Firewall link.

         In Windows XP:

a.     From the Control Panel, click Security Center.

b.    Click Windows Firewall.

2.      In Windows 7:

a.     In the Allowed Programs window, click Change settings.

b.    In the Allowed programs and features list, check or uncheck the desired check boxes, to allow or deny the selected program or feature, respectively.

c.     Click OK to save the setting and close the Allowed Programs window.

        In Windows XP:

a.     To enable or disable Windows Firewall for all network connections, on the General tab, select On (recommended) or Off (not Recommended).

b.    To enable default exceptions, select the Exceptions tab, and check or uncheck the check boxes for the default exceptions.

c.     To configure custom exceptions, on the Exceptions tab, click Add Program or Add Port, complete the dialog box, and click OK.

3.      In Windows 7:

a.     Choose StartControl PanelSystem and SecurityAdministrative Tools.

b.    In the Administrative Tools folder, click Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

c.     In the center pane, in the Overview section, click Windows Firewall Properties.

d.    Select the desired tab from the first three tabs—Domain Profile, Private Profile, Public Profile, and in the State section, to the right of the Protect network connections, click Customize.

e.     In the resultant dialog box, in the Network connections list, check or uncheck the check boxes for the specific network connections.

f.     Click OK twice to close the two dialog boxes and return to the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window.

g.     Close the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window.

 In Windows XP, to enable or disable Windows Firewall for specific network con- nections, on the Advanced tab, in the Network Connection Settings section, check or uncheck the check boxes for the specific network connections.

4.      If desired, configure Windows Firewall logging.

         In Windows 7:

a.     Choose StartControl PanelSystem and SecurityAdministrative Tools.

b.     In the Administrative Tools folder, click Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

c.     In the center pane, in the Overview section, click Windows Firewall Properties.

d.     On the Domain Profile tab, in the Logging section, click Customize. Configure the security log settings and click OK.

 In Windows XP, on the Advanced tab, in the Security Logging section, click Settings. Configure the log settings and click OK.

5.      If necessary, close all open windows.
