Procedure: Configure File System Permissions

To set NTFS permissions on a file or folder in Windows 7 and Windows XP:

1.      Log on as a user with Full Control to the file or folder object.

2.      In the object’s property sheet, select the Security tab.

3.      To add permission entries, click Add. Enter or search for the user or group name and click OK.

4.      To configure permissions, select a permission entry in the Group or user names list and check or uncheck the permission check boxes.

5.      Click OK.

6.      Test to verify that the correct permissions are in effect. Do this by attempting to access the files as an authorized user, and then as an unauthorized user.

Procedure: Enable, Disable, or Verify EFS Encryption

To encrypt or decrypt files or verify EFS encryption in Windows 7 and Windows XP:

1.      In Windows Explorer, right-click the file or folder and choose Properties.

2.      On the General tab, click Advanced.

3.      To encrypt or decrypt the file or folder, check or uncheck Encrypt contents to secure data, and then click OK.

4.      Click Apply.

5.      To have Windows encrypt existing files and subfolders within the folder, select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files in the dialog box that is displayed.

6.      Click OK.
