Procedure: Set Up an Internet Connection in Windows  7

To set up an Internet connection in Windows 7:

1.      Log on as a local administrator.

2.      If you will create a dial-up account, install a modem.

3.      Create a new connection object.

a.     In the Control Panel, click the Network and Internet link.

b.     Click the Network and Sharing Center link.

c.     In the Change your networking settings section, click the Set up a new connection or network link.

d.     In the Set Up a Connection or Network wizard, on the Choose a connection option page, select the Connect to the Internet option and click Next.

e.     On the How do you want to connect page, select one of the following:

  • Wireless if you want to connect through a wireless modem.
  • Broadband (PPPoE) if you have a cable or DSL modem.
  • Dial-up if you have a dial-up modem.

4.      Follow the prompts to set up the connection type you selected.

5.      Test the connection by browsing to a website.

Procedure : Set Up an Internet Connection in Windows XP

To create an Internet connection in Windows XP:

1.      Log on as a local administrator.

2.      If you will create a dial-up account, install a modem.

3.      Create a new connection object.

a.     In the Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections.

b.     Click Network Connections.

c.     Below Network Tasks, click Create a new connection, and click Next.

d.     On the Network Connection Type page, select Connect to the Internet and click Next.

e.     Below How do you want to connect to the Internet, select one of the following:

  • Choose from a list of Internet Service Providers (ISPs), if you want to select from a list of pre-configured connections to ISPs.
  • Set up my connection manually, if you want to manually define your connection to the ISP.
  • Use the CD I got from an ISP, if you want to use an ISP’s installation CD-ROM to set up the connection.

4.      Follow the prompts to set up the connection type you selected.

5.      Test the connection by browsing to a website.
