Optimizing the Pagefile

Procedure: Change the Pagefile Size

To change the size of the pagefile:

1.   In Windows 7:

a.   From System and Security, in the Control Panel, click System.

b.   In the left pane, click Advanced system settings.

2.   In Windows XP, in the System Properties dialog box, select the Advanced tab.

3.   On the Advanced tab, in the Performance section, click Settings.

4.    In the Performance Options dialog box, select the Advanced tab.

5.    In the Virtual memory section, click Change to open the Virtual Memory dialog box. You can see the current size of the pagefile in the Currently Allocated area at the bottom of the dialog box. By default, Windows 7 automatically allo- cates the pagefile size for the primary C drive created at the time of installation.

6.   In Windows 7, uncheck the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box to manually set the pagefile size.

7.   Select Custom size.

8.   Enter the new values in the Initial size (MB) and Maximum size (MB) text boxes.

9.   Click Set.

10. Click OK.

11. Click OK to allow the computer to be restarted for the changes to take effect.

12. Click OK two times.

13. Restart the computer when prompted.

Procedure: Add a Pagefile

To add a pagefile:

1.   In the Virtual Memory dialog box, select a volume from the Drive [Volume Label] list.

2.   Under Paging file size for each drive, select Custom size.

3.   Enter the initial and maximum sizes for the pagefile on this drive.

4.   Click Set.

5.   Click OK.

6.   Click OK to allow the computer to be restarted for the changes to take effect.

7.   Click OK twice.

8.   Restart the computer when prompted.

Procedure: Move the Pagefile

To move the pagefile:

1.      In the Virtual Memory dialog box, create a new pagefile on another disk.

2.      In the Virtual Memory dialog box, select the original pagefile.

3.      Under Paging file size for each drive, select No paging file.

4.      In the System Properties dialog box, click Yes.

5.      Click Set.

6.      Select the hard drive to which you want to move the pagefile.

7.      Click System managed size.

8.      Click OK.

9.      You will see a message informing you that you need to restart your computer. Click OK.

10.    Click OK twice more.

11.    Restart the computer when prompted.
